Helena joined Marks Education as an essay specialist in 2022 after a decade of working as an editor and writer in a range of fields including poetry, creative non-fiction, computer engineering, and TV journalism. She has a master’s and bachelor’s degree in English from Stanford University and an MFA in writing from Simmons College. In addition to her editing career, she has taught high school English and led many university writing workshops. As an editor and teacher, she has perfected the ability to draw out the heart of a story, an ability she brings to her work helping Marks students produce clear and vivid essays that let their personalities shine.
Helena’s favorite part of the personal statement process is witnessing students’ journeys as they discover who they are and who they want to be. Working with Helena, students will find connections between their experiences to build a narrative arc that provides context and depth to the rest of their application. In the process, students will learn how to represent themselves accurately and proudly in written form.
Helena grew up in the DC area and spends much of her free time with family, writing novels, and working on community projects in her neighborhood.
