Shivani Sutton became a Marks Education counselor in 2013, after spending nine years working in college admissions at the University of Maryland, Northeastern University, and the University of Georgia. Her broad experiences as both an admissions officer and independent educational counselor provide her with a strategic perspective for students and families facing college application decisions.
When applying to college, students will benefit from Shivani’s educational planning expertise in identifying the right coursework, testing, and selection of schools. A former international admissions officer, Shivani also has experience with international students and US citizens abroad and understands their unique challenges when mapping an educational path.
Shivani hopes that each student will acquire skills that will serve them for a lifetime as she guides them through the strategic decision-making process of choosing the right college and developing their most authentic voice through their college essays. Her curiosity and reliable, detail-oriented demeanor make the college admissions process less stressful, and she’s gratified when families bring their second or third child to work with her.
Shivani grew up in Fairfax County, VA, but has family on many continents, which may have contributed to her love of languages and learning about different cultures. Outside of the office, you might find Shivani Sutton coordinating literacy initiatives at her children’s schools or leading her daughter’s Girl Scout troop in life skill and confidence-building activities. But when she’s at her desk, the odds are strong that she is combing through data on the ever-changing college admissions landscape.
Shivani is an active member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and the Potomac and Chesapeake Association for College Admission Counseling (PCACAC), and is an associate member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA). She is available to work with students virtually and in-person at the Bethesda, MD, Washington, DC, and McLean, VA offices of Marks Education.

What our clients say about Shivani
In junior year, I had no clue where I wanted to go to college. I knew what I wanted to do career-wise but wasn’t sure what the right college path was to get me to where I needed to be. Looking back I am more than thankful for Shivani’s support. Not only did she help me find my dream school, but she helped me prepare my application and complete the correct steps in order to become prepared for college. Shivani never hesitated to reach out and help me if I was confused about anything, or if I needed her to read over an essay. I cannot imagine how different my upcoming college experience would be without Shivani’s guidance this past year, and I am very thankful for her and everything she has done to help me.— MARY S., MEMBER OF ROLLINS COLLEGE’S CLASS OF 2025
We feel so fortunate that our daughter was able to work with Shivani. She was a wonderful guidepost for her and for our older son for their choices, written essays, and all aspects of the stressful and long process of applying to college. It is comforting to know that such an important decision as college is in the hands of a competent and knowledgeable person. We weren’t sure how this process would go, given the pandemic and limited visits. We are thrilled that our daughter had multiple great choices for college and with her decision to attend her top choice in the fall. We are crossing our fingers that Shivani will be available to work with our youngest child in the future.— HAPPY PARENTS, NEW HAMPSHIRE
After one of our meetings with Shivani, I filled my husband in with her follow up memo from the meeting and subsequent email and conversation, and he said, ‘Shivani is worth her weight in gold!!’ I share the sentiment.— Anne and Michael Dawson, Washington, DC
