Shivani Sutton became a Marks Education counselor in 2013, after spending nine years working in college admissions at the University of Maryland, Northeastern University, and the University of Georgia. Her broad experiences as both an admissions officer and independent educational counselor provide her with a strategic perspective for students and families facing college application decisions.
When applying to college, students will benefit from Shivani’s educational planning expertise in identifying the right coursework, testing, and selection of schools. A former international admissions officer, Shivani also has experience with international students and US citizens abroad and understands their unique challenges when mapping an educational path.
Shivani hopes that each student will acquire skills that will serve them for a lifetime as she guides them through the strategic decision-making process of choosing the right college and developing their most authentic voice through their college essays. Her curiosity and reliable, detail-oriented demeanor make the college admissions process less stressful, and she’s gratified when families bring their second or third child to work with her.
Shivani grew up in Fairfax County, VA, but has family on many continents, which may have contributed to her love of languages and learning about different cultures. Outside of the office, you might find Shivani leading her daughter’s Girl Scout troop in life skill and confidence-building activities or volunteering in her son’s school. But when she’s at her desk, the odds are strong that she is combing through data on the ever-changing college admissions landscape.
Shivani is an active member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and the Potomac and Chesapeake Association for College Admission Counseling (PCACAC), and is an associate member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA). She is available to work with students virtually and in-person at the Bethesda, MD, Washington, DC, and McLean, VA offices of Marks Education.
