Marks Education (www.markseducation.com), an industry-leading educational planning, tutoring, and test preparation firm, seeks a counselor who is eager to work as part of a team offering college and educational advising to students preparing for high school, college, transfer, and graduate admissions. We provide one-on-one customized and strategic educational advising and admissions counseling to students and families.  

Applicants should be prepared to advise and effectively support students and parents through each phase of the college admission process, making it as stress-free and rewarding as possible. Counselors manage a caseload of students in grades 8 through 12, participate on a collaborative team, share knowledge and insights with colleagues, and assist with other responsibilities as needed.  

You’ll be the go-to person for answering questions, providing guidance, and helping prospective students navigate the complex college admissions and essay process. You’ll offer comprehensive knowledge of varied academic programs, admission requirements, and everything else that students need to know.  

This is a 30 to 40 hours per week role and will be based in our offices in McLean, Virginia, and Bethesda, Maryland, with the ability to work part-time from home. Depending on client needs, occasional meetings in our Washington, D.C. office may be required. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:  

The ideal candidate must be able to work independently and as part of a team. You must also possess the following: 

  • B.A./B.S., or advanced degree.  
  • 3-5 years of selective college/graduate admission/advising, teaching, school counseling/admission, or related experience.  
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills, with an ability to multi-task and prioritize.  
  • Self-awareness, sensitivity, and a commitment to a growth mindset towards professional development.  
  • A sense of professionalism with an ability to navigate family dynamics.
  • An eagerness to be part of a small company, bringing your strengths to continue to grow and improve services.  

 

Salary is commensurate with experience ($50,000-70,000 plus bonus), and we offer a generous benefits package (healthcare, 401K, flexible time off, and parking/transit and cell phone reimbursement).

Professional Tutor

Job description:

Marks Education (www.markseducation.com), an industry-leading educational planning, tutoring, and test preparation firm with offices in Bethesda, McLean, and Washington, D.C., is looking for a top-notch test preparation and academic subject tutor to work either 30 or 40 hours per week. Tutor will be based in our McLean, VA and Bethesda, MD offices. Hours will vary according to client schedules but must include one weekend day and late afternoon and evening times, with at least four in person days in the office required. The additional day can be virtual or in office.

We offer a generous salary commensurate with experience, and comprehensive benefits including healthcare, 401K, vacation, and parking and cell phone reimbursement. Our team members are some of the best instructors in the test preparation industry, who help clients achieve test preparation results that are four to six times published industry averages. Each instructor receives about 150 hours of initial training with our proprietary materials and strategies and about 100 hours of annual training. We work with a diverse student population, which includes students from multiple socio-economic groups.

The right candidate will have the following qualifications and values:

  • Excellent test taker: Candidates will be required to take part of a standardized test to demonstrate top-notch test-taking skills. Our tutors are also required to take the actual SAT, ACT® and other standardized tests once each year.
  • Academic knowledge base: Ability to tutor certain high school academic subjects, with a strong preference for math and science familiarity.
  • Willingness to work on non-teaching tasks such as developing our proprietary materials or writing blog posts.
  • Strong work ethic: We are hardworking professionals who go the extra mile.
  • Enthusiastic and engaged: The right candidate would enjoy working with students of all ages, and this enthusiasm must be evident.
  • Tutoring or teaching experience: We prefer at least six months of prior teaching or tutoring experience.
  • Eager to learn and grow our practice: We are looking for a person who is eager to take on new learning opportunities and who is eager to grow our business through word of mouth referrals.
  • Desire to work with low-income students: Each Marks Education employee enjoys providing services to low-income or first-generation students, including Collegiate Directions, Inc. (CDI) Scholars (www.collegiatedirections.org), whom we support in getting to and through four year selective colleges.
