College Admissions Podcasts

Want to take your college research to the next level? Looking for ways to “demonstrate interest” that will stand out? Consider tuning in to the wide world of college admissions podcasts!  These days, almost every college and university publishes multiple podcasts on college student life. They offer a great way to learn more about any school—and can be a helpful resource when researching for your “Why Us?” essays and interviews  Colleges have so many podcasts (and many that run two or three times and then disappear), that there is no comprehensive list of these offerings. In this post, we wanted to give you a few examples and highlight three broad categories of podcasts to keep in mind while you search
Podcasts on College Student Life
These podcasts discuss general topics relevant to student life– school spirit, campus events, etc.– and are a great source for up-to-date info on the general campus “vibe.” Examples include: Vassar’s Conversations at the Salt Line Rice University’s Bowl of Rice U Penn’s College Voices
Subject Specific Podcasts
These more targeted podcasts let you dial in to specifics on research being done by professors and students in areas of interest. You might want to check out: Bowdoin Presents Washington University in St. Louis’ Hold That Thought Princeton’s African American Studies Podcast The University of Michigan’s Museum of Natural History Podcasts Harvard’s Mittal Institute Podcast in South Asian Studies The University of Virginia’s Democracy in Danger Podcast MIT’s LabCast Yale Podcast Network University of California UC Podcasts Off The Page: Columbia UP Podcast University of Toronto Podcast Eastern Michigan University’s Career Corner Podcast Center for Talent Development at Northwestern University Boston University Center for the Humanities Podcast The University of Chicago Law Review’s Podcast: Briefly
Athletics Podcasts
If you are already into college athletics, you know that there is an entire universe of podcasts of varying quality and approach, many by third-party content creators. To get to know more about the goings-on at a particular school, we would recommend starting with a podcast published by the particular college– then branch out from there!
Conclusion
Like many aspects of college admissions, the podcast world is vast—you can’t listen to everything! But subscribing to a handful of university podcasts to can be an excellent way to learn about campus life and events, to help determine whether a particular school is a good fit for you, and to prep for writing those “Why Us?” essays.  Demonstrating interest can be tricky. While faithful podcast listening alone isn’t enough to prove your devotion to a particular school, it is a great place to learn more about the exciting features they offer. This gives you a great leg up when interviewing or essay writing. However, more than that: it helps you make an informed decision about where you’ll spend the next 4+ years. So, take a look at what’s out there, and keep in mind that your Marks Education counselor is here to help you curate your playlist for demonstrating interest with college podcasts
