If you feel like it’s a bit too early to be planning your summer, you’re right—well, almost right. Each year, there seem to be more and more early summer program application deadlines pushed into the early winter and even the fall. Not to worry! These are still few and far between. But it’s worth considering your summer plans at this point in the year to make sure you aren’t missing any early application summer opportunities. For your reference, here are a few examples of amazing summer programs with earlier submission and enrollment dates:   
NIH High School Summer Internship Program (HS-SIP) 
The National Institute of Health Sciences has applications that open in November and close on February 16th. BUT! It’s important to remember that this application takes a lot of legwork in advance (and the NIH strongly recommends submitting by mid-January at the latest). This summer internship program offers 11th and 12th graders an opportunity to explore careers in research and healthcare. Interns are placed in a research group to work under the supervision of a principal investigator, and participate in orientation, leadership, professional development, and well-being programs as part of a learning community.This is a fantastic early application summer opportunity for students interested in biology, engineering, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, nursing, physics, computer science, bioinformatics, and other health-related fields. In addition to gaining top-notch research experience, interns in this program have access to educational and career advising, a comprehensive well-being and resilience program, a focus on the core competencies needed for success in scientific careers, and further professional development programs. To apply, applicants must be… 
  • A U.S citizen or permanent resident 
  • 17 years of age or older as of June 15th, 2024 
  • If you are under 18 years old by June 15th, you are eligible if you live within 40 miles of the NIH campus program.
  • Enrolled in a high school as a junior or senior at the time when you submitted your application
  • U.S citizens may apply if they are enrolled at least half-time in a high school. U.S permanent residents must be enrolled in a high school in the U.S. to be eligible.
 
Yale Young Global Scholars 
Yale’s Young Global Scholars Program now has an early decision deadline in November and a regular decision date of January 10th.The YGS program is a two-week session designed for outstanding high school students around the world. NASA’s Summer Internship application deadline is rolling, meaning you can apply at any time throughout the fall and winter until the final deadline of February 2nd.NASA offers students several opportunities to undertake meaningful and challenging projects that impact humanity. These programs provide training, mentoring, and career development opportunities while working with the very best science, finance, engineering, information technology, and business minds in the world.NASA Office of STEM Engagement (OSTEM)NASA’s OSTEM internship offers paid opportunities that allow high school and college-aged students to contribute to projects under the guidance of a NASA mentor.These programs offer cycles in the fall, spring, and summer; with no prior experience required. Virginia Governor’s School
When applying to the Virginia Governor’s School, it’s important to remember that each subject area (Humanities, Engineering, Dance, e.g.) has a separate application process, but they tend to involve being nominated by your school in the fall and a final application deadline in January. Meaning, if you’re interested, it’s time to discuss the nomination process with your school counselor or teachers!This program provides high school juniors and seniors with intensive educational experiences in visual and performing arts, humanities, mathematics, science, and technology, or mentorships in marine science and engineering.Every year, the Summer Residential Governor’s School focuses on one specific area of interest. Alongside scientists, physicians, and a variety of other professionals, students spend 4 weeks on a college campus investigating an issue through lab work, field studies, research, individual or group programs, performances, and seminars with noted scholars, visiting artists, and other professionals. 
Juilliard Summer Ballet Program
Juilliard’s early summer program application deadlines are much sooner than others and more highly selective than competing performing arts programs. Juilliard’s Summer Ballet Program requires an audition video, due on December 15th. These videos take time to prepare and to complete, so it’s a good time to get started! The Juilliard Summer Dance Intensive is a curated, three-week program designed to introduce dancers to Juilliard and provide information about college dance programs that will assist dancers in making decisions about their educational and professional goals.
