Marks Education’s Summer Reading and Writing Intensive: What to Expect
We started our Summer Reading and Writing Program over the pandemic to address the learning gaps parents and students were noticing as a result of online instruction. Due to its popularity and effectiveness, we’ve adapted it over the years to keep pace with the evolving needs to students, always remaining true to its core purpose of tailored assistance and growth.
For the past two decades, we’ve built a name for ourselves helping students around the world achieve their academic goals. Our Summer Programs are informed by this experience and celebrated by parents and students alike. We recognize that every student’s journey and needs are different. That’s why our 12-session, one-on-one instructional program is customizable and able to meet students where they are and achieve any number of goals, be it summer reading help, writing improvement, or specific academic coursework preparation. Curious to learn more about what the program offers? Stick around and find out!
Middle School
The nature of our summer programs means that no two learning paths are the same. For younger students, especially those entering middle school, not having a formally assigned summer reading presents the student and tutor with a blank canvas to work with. Sometimes students come with preferred texts they want to read, but we’re also more than happy to suggest reading materials that align with your student’s interests.
The texts will be chosen not just for their educational value but also for their individual ability to spark curiosity and passion for reading in your student. The goal is to transform what could have been a mundane reading task into a fun learning experience– it’s a chance to gain fundamental skills outside of the traditional classroom.
High School
High school students, namely those gearing up for the rigorous courses like Honors English, AP Literature, or AP Language, face a different set of challenges. Our summer reading program has something to offer these students as well by focusing on the analytical and compositional skills required to excel in such advanced courses. For these students, the program often integrates their school summer reading assignments.
Our literature package is known for its guided deep dives into thematic analysis, character development, and critical interpretation. Our non-fiction package focuses, on the other hand, on how writers use language to persuade, inform, or motivate an audience. However, it’s our approach that motivates students to not only complete their assignments, but also gain a richer appreciation of literature, persuasive writing, and more in the process. It’s our goal to allow them to go into the school year better prepared and more confident.
Writing Skills
Like our focus on honing critical reading skills, the Summer Reading and Writing Program also places emphasis on developing analytical writing abilities. Enrolled students are guided by their expert tutors through learning to construct well-reasoned arguments, provide proper evidence and articulate with clarity. With us, students learn to write better thesis statements and develop proper outlines before writing their essays. These exercises teach students how to present their ideas effectively, whether they’re writing a persuasive essay, decoding a poem, or analyzing historical documents. The focus on structured, coherent, and impactful writing prepares students for the writing challenges they will encounter in high school and beyond, from high-stakes exams to college applications.
Customized
Our Summer Reading and Writing Programs recognize that the interests and needs of students change from one to the next. Our tutors work with students from all over the world who wish to explore genres or topics outside their usual curriculum, from historical fiction to science fiction or fantasy. Our plan is to help students go beyond merely making it through the upcoming school year. We hope to also instill confidence, and empower them to approach complex texts and writing assignments with assurance and capability.
How To Enroll
Our Summer Reading and Writing program is open to students entering 7th grade and above, and starts with a complimentary 30- minute consultation. This meeting sets the stage for a summer of growth, as we discuss what you hope to accomplish and how, allowing tutors to understand a student’s needs and collaboratively outline a plan of action tailored to their specific goals.
Enroll now to prepare not just for the upcoming school year but for a future of effective learning and achievement. Your path to academic excellence begins this summer!
