Marks Education’s Summer Reading and Writing Intensive: What to Expect
In the summer of 2020, Marks Education launched our Summer Reading and Writing Intensive, a program designed in response to the needs of families seeking additional academic support during the uncertain times brought on by the pandemic. The program was so popular, we continued it after the pandemic to enable students to enrich their summer break through a dynamic, highly personalized, education program adapted to the evolving educational needs of our schools and the diverse interests of our students.

Personalized
At the heart of Marks Education’s Summer Reading and Writing Intensive lies a commitment to personalized education. Recognizing that each student’s journey is different, our 12 session, one-on-one instructional program is designed to cater to a wide range of needs, be it summer reading help, writing improvement, or preparation for specific academic challenges like AP courses and exams.
Middle School
The program’s nature means that no two learning paths are identical. For younger students, especially those entering middle school, the absence of assigned summer reading typically presents a blank canvas. Sometimes students come to us with a list of preferred texts to read, but we’re happy to suggest our own that align with your student’s interests. These are chosen not just for their educational value but for their individual ability to spark curiosity and passion for reading in your student. The goal is to transform what could have been a mundane task into an adventure in learning and a chance to gain fundamental skills outside of the traditional classroom.
High School
High school students, particularly those gearing up for the rigorous demands of Honors English or AP Literature, face a different set of challenges. A summer reading program adapts to these needs by focusing on the analytical and compositional skills required to excel in such advanced courses. For these students, the program often integrates students’ school summer reading assignments, which allows them to enhance their understanding through deep dives into thematic analysis, character development, and critical interpretation. This approach ensures that students not only complete their assignments but also gain a richer appreciation of literature and its broader contexts, going into the school year better prepared and more confident!
Writing Skills
Parallel to honing critical reading skills, the Intensive places a significant emphasis on developing analytical writing abilities. Students are guided through the process of constructing well-reasoned arguments, supported by evidence and articulated with clarity. Students learn to write better thesis statements and develop outlines before writing their essays. These exercises in thoughtful communication are pivotal. They teach students how to present their ideas effectively, whether they’re writing a persuasive essay, decoding a poem, or analyzing historical documents. The focus on structured, coherent, and impactful writing prepares students for the varied writing challenges they will encounter, from high-stakes exams to college applications and beyond.
Customized
The Summer Reading and Writing Intensive recognizes that the interests and needs of students can vary widely. Tutors work with students who wish to explore genres or topics outside their usual curriculum, from the intrigue of historical fiction to the imaginative realms of science fiction and fantasy. Our plan is that students go beyond merely navigating the imminent challenges of the upcoming school year. We hope to instill confidence, empowering students to approach complex texts and writing assignments with a newfound assurance and capability.
How To Enroll
Open to students entering 7th grade and above, the Summer Reading and Writing Intensive invites participants to start with a complimentary 30- minute consultation. This initial meeting sets the stage for a summer of growth, allowing tutors to understand a student’s needs and outline a plan of action tailored to their specific goals.
