Michael Lawrence has been a tutor with Marks Education since 2019.  In that  time, hel has spent hundreds of hours helping students to prepare for the SAT, PSAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE, and HSPT. Michael takes a detailed approach to these tests, helping students to identify key areas of focus right away in order to master each subject on the test. Michael has contributed to Marks Education’s materials and resource projects, and was key in the development of our popular Summer Reading & Writing programs.

In addition to test prep, Michael specializes in the humanities, helping students to become effective writers and succeed in challenging classes such as AP English Language, AP Literature and Composition, AP Micro and Macro Economics, and AP US History. He is available to support the development of academic and study skills in all high school subjects and especially enjoys offering academic support in any literature or history subject. He views all instruction as fundamentally collaborative, and uses this approach to empower ambitious students, engage students with learning differences, and expand the horizon of their achievements.

Michael studied English Language and Literature at the University of Maryland, College Park where he helped to manage the university’s long-running college radio station.  He earned his MA in English Literature at Georgetown University, where he wrote a Master’s thesis on the literature of financial crises.

As a writing tutor at four different universities, including NYU Shanghai, Michael has guided writers from diverse educational and language backgrounds through every step of the writing process. He also taught English and U.S. and World History to middle and high school students at the independent Fusion Academy in Brooklyn. As a tutor and teacher in a broad range of settings, Michael has developed a passion for assisting students with study skills and critical thinking. He currently resides in Silver Spring, where he enjoys watching movies in foreign languages, discovering new books, and looking forward to his next opportunity to travel.
